While OppNet does not typically list part-time jobs on our Opportunity Board, we have compiled a list of resources to support Fellows who are looking for employment options for extra income. ✅ Utilize your network. While job search sites are great, you are competing with a lot of other applicants. Ask around at your school/college and in your community for potential connections. Connections through friends and family are a great way to discover unadvertised roles or get your foot in the door.
✅ Be selective. Make sure you understand the job requirements and only apply if you meet them. Be honest and realistic about your qualifications and schedule availability. Each application takes time to complete, so be selective about what you apply to!
✅ Carefully follow application instructions. Most jobs require you to complete an online application with your education and employment history, in addition to uploading a resume if you have one. The application may specify what file type to use (Word document vs. PDF) or where to send your documents. This is an important step in showing the potential employer you can follow instructions! Make sure your responses are error-free, accurate, and fully completed.
✅ Prepare for a quick turnaround. Part-time job applications often move quickly, so check your email frequently and be prepared for potential interviews soon after applying. Make sure your contact information is up to date.
✅ Track your applications and follow up politely. We recommend tracking your applications. If you haven’t heard back within a week or two, sending a polite follow-up email is okay. This shows initiative and can help keep your application top of mind for employers.
✅ Watch out for scams! Be wary of companies that ask for payment for training or materials. If you aren't sure if a company seems legit, please reach out to OppNet's Career Success team at careersuccess@opportunitynetwork.org.
✅ Keep applying. You will likely need to apply to several jobs to hear back. Be persistent and keep on applying!
